Best laid plans

So, England finishes second in Group C and doesn’t get knocked out. Excellent. That was an agonizing 90 minutes, but at least England led for most of the game. They play Germany on Sunday. Not so good. C’mon England. I sure hope Fabio has them practicing those penalties.

And USA finishes top of the Group and so go on to face Ghana in the next round. Good? Maybe.

The last time the US played Ghana in the World Cup it was the last game of the group stages. I was speaking at a performance management conference and though I had planned to sneak off for a little footie in the afternoon, it was at Earl’s Court and there wasn’t any place to go. I planned to keep my head down and my eyes away from the Internet avoiding all talk of scores and watch the game replayed on the higher up channels of the satellite tv.

A good plan.

Until I got out of the train station at Tooting. And I saw this:

There was literally dancing in the streets. They were thrilled. It was the first time they’d ever reached the knockout stages. Let’s hope the Ghanian community of Tooting are crying in their beers on Saturday.

Lane Kiffin quits – LOSER

Our head coach has gone and quit on us after only 14 months. Tennessee has been struggling for quite some time and this past season under Kiffin’s leadership hasn’t left me exactly over-brimming with hope for the next couple of years, but I was willing to wait and see what his ‘recruiting genius’ would bring. But now this has gotta, well – not be good.

I suppose it’s some consolation I guess that USC is the “only school” that Lane woulda left us for. I guess a similar level of comfort that I would feel if my husband ran off with some skank-floozy and said “Honey, she’s the only other woman I could see myself leaving you for.”*

Lane – I hope USC gives you the clap.

*Turns out it’s worse than that – it’s like if my husband had run off with the floozy in MY car with my cat and told me by emailing me from my new Mac that he’d also taken with him.

You know it ain't easy

1. I hate Alabama. I hate them with a passion. I hate losing to Alabama. I love beating Bama. I know it’s trendier to hate Florida these days and all that, but I’m a product of my age (my formative years were in the humiliating Bear Bryant era). I really, really hate Bama. Really.

One time I was on a plane across the Atlantic next to a Bama fan. Nice guy, first time to Europe, yatta, yatta. In a spirit of friendship he said “Go Vols” – he wanted me to reciprocate with “R@LL t!de” but I wouldn’t do it. Can’t say it. Won’t type it.

2. I love Texas. I’ve had a fabulous time supporting Texas as my other team. I’ve had a warm and enthusiastic welcome from Texas fans* in London. I’ve had a great time watching Texas football in pubs across London. Great people. Good times. They’re even UT – their colours are orange and white. (Ok, somebody left their orange out in the sun too long, but still).

But all that being said….ummm – Roll Tide. The SEC kicks ass. It sucks to lose to Bama, but they are the National Champions.
